What are hair wavers?

These are the latest hair styling tool to hit our beauty making collection.

They ain’t pretty, but these innovative stylers use multiple heated barrels to mould your hair into gorgeous flowing waves. Different wavers have various barrel shapes to create either tight, loose, or S-shaped waves.

They’re also popular for adding volume to long hair- if you have short or medium length locks, you can also use it to give your do some texture.

The best thing about using them is that your beachy waves will stay in for longer. You can wave your hair for a night out and it’ll still be there the next night too. Perfect.

Are hair wavers bad for dyed hair?

Waving your hair risks fading your color because the heat damages the color pigments in your hair and can make them fade faster. Just like using straighteners.

The trick is to always, always use a heat protection spray before, during and after you style with heated tools.

Reviewers say:

“So impressed with these wavers! They’re not as big and chunky as the three-barrel types you can get and they create soft waves that stay in my hair for a couple of days. Highly recommend!”

“These are awesome for creating the perfect beach wave look. So easy to use and there’s a temperature control which is brilliant for my thick hair which needs more heat.”

“I’m so pleased with these beach wavers. They are lightweight to hold and give the wavy styled hair I was looking for. I have tried other deep wavers but found them heavy or awkward to use. But I love theses ones. Definitely worth it.”

Our experience:

There isn’t a lot of info out there about these from Alure themselves, but hte reviews are excellent online so we had to give them a go.

They’re easy to use and the temperature control is a bonus if you have thicker but you’ll need to be careful with fine or thin hair that you don’t scorch your hair shaft. These will give you a semi-crimped/wavy look with flatter waves rather than deep. The plates infuse your hair with argan oil as you use them which makes them great for colored hair.

Best for: Mermaid wavy look.

#2 Bed Head Wave Artist Deep Waver for Beachy Waves Generation II

Specification & Features:

  • Turn your hair into a work of art with the Bed Head Wave Artist™
  • Tourmaline Ceramic Deep Waver.
  • Smooth out hair with a paddle brush after using for distinctive, masterfully sculpted waves that everyone will notice.

Reviewers say:

“Doesn’t fry your hair and makes perfect beach waves!! Love this tool especially for the price!”

“The product is super easy to use and is as straightforward as a hair tool could possibly be. It creates lovely waves that hold all day with hairspray (and I have very thick hair).”

“My favorite hair tool ! my hair is super thick & long & it only takes me 20 minutes to do my WHOLE HEAD with this ! my go-to when i need to have a fire hair do.”

Our experience:

From our friends at Bed Head comes this powerful little number to give us wavy beachy tresses.

First off, it is a little too powerful. There’s a temperature control but you can’t see it while styling so it’s easy to let it get too hot. Thing is, you need it really hot to help the waves set in your hair and you have to hold it for a little longer. BUT, the waves came with loads of volume and a really nice shape and there are loads of YouTube tutorials on how to use it so maybe we just need more practice. Go for this if you’re looking for big hair waves.

Best for: Volume and lift.

#3 Toni & Guy Deep Barrel Waver.

Specification & Features:

  • Award-winning Toni & Guy Glamour Deep Barrel Waver Black creates natural-looking, salon-quality waves.
  • Features 32mm ultra-deep plates and 25 variable heat settings.
  • This waver creates enviable, luscious locks on all hair types.

Reviewers say:

“Oh I just love this, I’ve tried for so long to make my hair wavy with hair straighteners and I just can’t do it! Hairdressers make it look so easy. But with this, it is so easy, no effort required. Just clamp your hair and you have lovely natural looking waves :)”

“I’ve been using this for a couple of weeks now, it did take me a couple of goes to get the hang of it but once I did it was fantastic. You get really natural looking waves that look effortless.”

“It’s so easy to use and heats up really quickly so when I’m in a rush I’m morning it’s so trouble at all. You can also keep your hair in quite big sections as the barrel is big which is another bonus when I’m in a rush.”

Our experience:

Using the Toni&Guy waver is easy. The beauty of these ones is that they do all the hard work for you.

You use them a lot like straighteners where you work on sections of your hair on by one, from root to tip. You only have to clamp them down on your hair for 20 seconds or so at intervals to create deep waves all the way down the length of your hair.

You can adjust the temperature if your hair is finer to protect your color. Thicker hair will need the heat. Best of all, because the waves created are really deep, they last. With a generous spritz of hairspray, they held fast for a few days. These are the best for us.

Best for: Thick hair and effortless waves that last.

“Love these so much! So easy to use and give a lovely deep wave with loads volume! Can do my hair so quickly!!”

“My hair is naturally straight – I have had my hair in waves for 3 days now and they have only just started to straighten again!”

Our experience:

From the mistresses of styling tools come these little wonders. Compact in size and price, the reviews are pretty good too.

They are very similar to our TOP PICK: Toni&Guy Deep Barrel Wavers but had one main difference – frizz. If you want the waves to last, to use mousse after washing your hair or hairspray when waving to help smooth and shine.

However, if you’re up for a bit more styling care, these are the best for budget. Also came with a very handy heat proof mat!

Best for: Value for money.

  • The high heat feature has constant sensors which are responsible for monitoring heat temperature and quickly restores the heat back to the ideal styling levels.

Reviewers say:

“For the days I feel like waves and extra volume, this is brilliant! I never use products in my hair to prevent the waves from drooping by the day’s end, because I don’t have to. Waves stay tight through the day every time!”

“I’ve had this iron for over 10 years. It’s my go-to quick hair style. It takes me like 10 minutes to finish my hair and I have long hair! Seriously, best iron ever.”

“Love these for the beach waves affect it puts to your hair. Definitely would recommend if you have straight hair that you want a little bounce & wave too.”

Our experience:

This Revlon waver is a classic and was one of wavers to hit the shelves before we even knew we needed them. Not much has changed it its design over the years. It’s heavy compared to wavers on the market so it can cramp up your hand a little!

The barrel is a bigger wave, which makes hair waves looser and more relaxed. We love these for creating a boho chic style that looks totally natural.

“It’s great that you have the option to do different types of waves by just twisting the top. I also used it on the lowest heat setting for my little girl and it worked so well and stayed wavy all day, she was so happy!”

“With having short hair, I struggled to use traditional tongues without either burning my head or my fingers, with these I have been able to have wavy hair with minimal effort, I can adjust the depth of the curl depending on the style that I want to go for, very easy to use.”

Hair wavers FAQS

How do I choose a hair waver?

First, know that no matter what brand of heat styling tool you use, it will be hot and can cause damage to your hair if not used properly.

The main difference between the different types is the shape of the barrel-choose one that matches your style.

Straighteners are for straightening while curling irons create waves or curls in your locks! These can get you those effortless beachy hair waves in no time.

Is a hair waver and crimper the same thing?

Nope! They’re certainly not. Both are hot tools that create different styles. But that’s where the similarity ends.

A hair waver helps create loose waves in wet or dry hair to give a natural, beachy look.

A hair crimper creates tighter, smaller waves, much different than its wave-making counterpart.

Do hair wavers damage hair?

If you’ve got a head of hair that’s been the victim of too many round brushes, flat irons, and curling wands, you’re probably wondering if there are any options for styling your locks without further damaging them.

While some people do experience some heat damage, it all depends on how you use them.

If used correctly (i.e., at lower temperatures), they will not only leave your locks looking great but healthy too!

What is the easiest hair waver?

The answer to this question may depend on your hair type.

If you have fine, straight hair, then you might find that a curling iron is the easiest way to add waves. Simply wrap small sections of hair around the barrel of the iron and hold for a few seconds.

If you have thicker, coarser hair, then you might find it easier to use a waver.

Of the ones we reviewed above, the Remington Proluxe 4-in-1 Hair Waver is the easiest tool for creating different kinds of waves and curls.

With four interchangeable barrels, it’s easy to create a variety of styles. The ceramic-coated barrels heat up quickly and evenly, and the temperature settings make it easy to find the perfect setting for any hair type.

The waver also comes with a handy storage case, so you can keep all the barrels organized.

And best of all, the waver is sleek and compact, making it easy to take with you on the go. Whether you’re looking for beachy waves or tight curls, the Remington Proluxe 4-in-1 Hair Waver is the easiest to use.

Do wavers work on thin hair?

The answer is yes…and no.

Anyone with thin hair knows the struggle of trying to get any sort of volume or texture. It’s like your hair is just begging to be flat and lifeless.

If you use a waver on too high of a setting, it’s going to fry your hair and make it look even more limp and lifeless. But if you use it on a lower setting and focus on the roots, you can actually get some pretty decent results.

The key is to not overdo it and to focus on creating texture rather than trying to Curl your whole head of hair.

So, if you’re looking for a little boost in the volume department, grab yourself a waver and give it a try. Just don’t go overboard with it.

Do hair wavers work on curly hair?

If you’re looking to get a looser, wavy look, then go ahead and give it a shot.

But if you’re trying to achieve big, bouncy waves, you might want to invest in a bigger barrel waver.

That said, we know that not everyone’s hair is the same, so it’s always best to test out a few different techniques until you find what works best for you and your locks.

Parting words.

If you’re looking for a new hair style that’s sexy, fun and cool – with an on-trend vibe that can go from day to night or beachy waves are the must-have look.

These sexy dimensional waves will give any haircut an instant makeover!

So, which is the best waver to get this look at home? We know that there are a lot of options out there and all have their own pros and cons. There’s no right or wrong answer here – but these top ones in our list should be your first stops on your search for the perfect tool. What are you waiting for? Good luck!
