How Getting Your Colors ‘Done’ Will Transform Your Hairstyle, Wardrobe and More.

Evidence Based

Fact Checked

Have you ever wondered how some people just seem to have their style perfectly dialed in, every outfit, every accessory just right?

I was definitely not one of those people—until I discovered the magic of getting my colors analyzed.

It sounds almost too simple, but understanding whether you fall into the spring, summer, autumn, or winter category based on your skin tone can revolutionize not just your wardrobe but your entire look.

Based on this book called “Color Me Beautiful” from the 80s, seasonal color analysis helps determine which shades and contrast levels bring out the best in your unique complexion and features.

It’s divided into four seasons – spring, summer, autumn, and winter – with four subsections for each: light, true, bright, and deep.

Here’s an awesome video that explains why finding your season can help you identify everything from flattering lipstick shades to hair colors that work with your skin tone.

And you know what? It convinced me to go blonde after years of rocking a deep brunette hue.

Discovering My True Colors

For years, I was a dark ash brown and I thought that suited me (it probably did at the time). But as grey strands began to weave their way through, I was tipped off that it might be time to lighten up.

So, when I ventured into the world of color analysis, I was looking not just for a change but for a transformation.

What I learned was more revealing than I could have imagined. My colorist revealed that I’m a “bright spring”—a palette full of vibrant, warm hues that actually complemented the grey and showed me how I could embrace it rather than cover it up.

The suggestion was to go for a bronde—a color I actually had naturally when I was younger.

In fact, both my daughters natural hair is a dark blonde shade. It felt like I was not just changing my hair color, but reclaiming a part of my youth, going back to my roots in the most literal sense!

The real kicker was the realization about my undertone. I was always puzzled about whether I leaned more towards warm or cool since I loved ashy colors but felt that gold jewelry looked splendid on me.

Turns out, I’m neutral, which perfectly explains this mix!

What Happens at a Seasonal Color Analysis Session?

To find your season, you analyze three dimensions: value (light or dark skin), chroma (muted or bright), and undertone (warm, cool, or neutral). Or, you could just let an expert figure it out for you, like I did!

During my color analysis session, I felt like I had stepped into a world where every color had something to say about me.

It was an hour session where the lovely expert, Caroline, draped various fabrics in a rainbow of colors around my shoulders, one after the other. She watched intently to see how each hue interacted with my skin, hair, and eyes.

It was fascinating to see the instant transformations. Some colors made my face light up as if someone had just flipped on a light, while others made me look as though I hadn’t slept in days.

Caroline was like a detective, sifting through clues to find the hues that made my eye color pop, my skin glow and made me look my best.

As she worked, Caroline explained the basics of color theory and the different seasons, which I found incredibly interesting. She taught me how colors aren’t just pretty or ugly; they’re a powerful tool that can enhance natural beauty when used correctly.

“Colors are more than just a visual delight; they have the power to transform how we are perceived and how we perceive ourselves. Each color you wear casts a subtle light that can enhance your natural beauty in profound ways,” Caroline explained during our session.

“By finding the right palette for your skin tone, you’re not just choosing colors that look good; you’re choosing colors that resonate with who you are.”

This session wasn’t just about finding pretty colors; it was about discovering the hues that complemented my unique features the best.

Turns out, I’m a “bright spring,” which includes celebs like Emma Stone. As a bright spring, my chroma is bright, my undertone is neutral-leaning-warm, and the contrast between my features and skin is medium to high.

It was more than just a makeover. With each fabric swatch, I learned a little more about what makes me ‘me.’ Caroline’s keen eye for color and her explanations made the whole experience super interesting.
